~The Coziness Of Home, Solitude & A Creative Routine~

These words go hand in hand for me......A cozy & tidy home... with something baking in the oven or simmering on the stove.. the quiet solitude that comes from working at home ...a bit of classical music playing softly ..candles lit....a nice hot shower....something cozy to wear ...and then..... my creativity comes alive.

Do you have a creative routine? Something or things....that you usually do..or perhaps MUST do each day, in a particular way..at a particular time.......... that set's your creativity in motion? In college we were taught to do just this to enable our brains to kick into "homework" mode and I guess it just stuck with me. I have a routine that I follow every day. Some days life steps in and changes the schedule a bit but for the most part it runs rather smoothly.

Solitude & the coziness of our home have much to do with this creative routine of mine....I have certain "needs" that must come together in order for my creativity to kick in. I won't go into my whole routine but needless to say... keeping a cozy and tidy home, caring for my family, baking and cooking are all part of who I am as a creative person. I can not create in the midst of a mess..chaos is not my friend. I not only believe that your home should be something you are proud of....something you take pride in by keeping it clean and cozy.... but I also need to have it this way in order for my mind to relax & settle down so that I can be creative.

I'm sure there are people out there who can create in the midst of disorder, mess and clutter ..some folks may even need it to be that way..for their creativity to kick in.. the creative process is different for everyone.....to each his own I say...

*So I ask you...do you have a creative routine....what works best for you....order..or disorder?*

....whatever it may be....recognize what works for you & go with it...as it is what will bring you the most joy.

I'm off now to mix up a batch of homemade bread..the house is tidy, my candles are lit & today rather than music, I am opting to listen to one of my favorite movies as I work; "You've Got Mail"... my creativity is ready to get to work. :)

Hi Doreen!
Love this post! I feel the same way. I need to have my house nice and cozy before I can let myself create. If the house isn't put together before I begin to create I just can't get in the right creating mood!
I need my surroundings to be calm and pleasing to the eye. I love to put in a good movie, light my favorite candle, and get the dog settled on the couch, once thats all done I can start creating!
There's nothing better then a good day of creating!
Hope you have a wonderful day! And thanks for sharing! I so enjoy reading your post!

Bravo!!

You definitely know how to express your feelings without being judgemental ~ and your acceptance of other people is genuine ~ even though they may not be the same.

It is a true pleasure to have met you and to realize there are loving, caring and nice people in the world who truly do care.

It is always a pleasure to visit your lovely home and your creative world. Hugs, Marilyn

I'm with you! I cannot create in chaos either. I also love to have the candles lit and the music playing in the background. In fact, my most creative juice flow in the middle of the night when all is quiet and peaceful. Well put my friend, Dawn

I really needed to read your post on this very snowy day here in upstate New York--thank you! I, too, cannot THINK (and I write for a living) without completing my little morning routine--making sure the house is picked up, vacuumed, dog brushed, etc...I also light a candle on my desk and listen to beautiful piano music as I write away....we are kindred spirits! Of course, my newspaper column and blog are all about cooking, so you know I always have something tasty in the oven!

Yes, Doreen... I share your love of creating in a tidy place~ I cannot live or work in chaos either.
My morning routine starts with the animals... once they are fed and fresh water put out for them, then I'm free to work until afternoon, when I check on them again to make sure everything is okay. (And give them a treat, not that they're spoiled or anything... hehe)
There is one thing we differ on~ after working in a noisy medical office for almost 20 years with Top 40 music blaring in the background constantly, I like complete quiet most of the time... I do turn on a little music in the afternoons while I cook, though.

Ever since I started caring for Lili afternoons days a week, and my folks health needs changed, and I have the magazine work, I don't have the amount of time I used to have to get that settled calmness and I am not creating as much as I used too. This post explained perfectly why my creative juices don't flow as readily anymore. I need order and routine and tidyness ; i need to know that meals are ready and laundry is caught up and all that comes with making a house a home, all that goes into 'nesting'. With my new responsibilities, by the time I do it all, I am too tired to create, and it's time to pack it in for another day.

I know this is just a chapter of my life though and I am blessed to be able to be with the youngest and oldest in our family, and someday again, I will have time for more creative things.

Great post - just what I needed to read this week! Thanks so much!

Doreen,
This could have been a a photo of you .I can not ever remember a time when you were not without paper and pen. Growing up we would often finds Scraps of paper lying about with a poem, story or a list of supplies for a new project.
As a young married women you took on the task of having holidays ,making room for everyone ,Aunt DEE'S was where we all gathered. A home that is and always was so cozy and inviting yes there always is something baking maybe a new recipe or an old favorite. It is comforting to know we can find you either sitting at your desk and writing or tucked away in your studio, the scent of candles burning through out the house as you make one of your wonderful designs come to life.It is a joy as your Mom to watch as you make your dreams come true.Love you MOM

Good afternoon Heather, Marilyn, Dawn, Leslie, Paula, Linda and Mom ~ It's amazing how very much we do have in common when it comes to our creative routines and our lives in general. I do believe that's why many of us congregate towards each other...our common interest...we tend to make friends with people who share our values and beliefs :)

Wishing each and every one of you a wonderful day and thank you all for taking the time to stop by :)
